How do I make a claim on my home insurance?

First of all, check your policy documents to see if you are covered for the accident or incident that has occurred. If so, most insurers will have a 24 hour emergency assistance team that you can call to inform them of what has happened. They will usually arrange for someone to call out and access the damage. They may also advise you of the best thing to do in the interim, as well as help you seek alternative accommodation if your home is damaged by flood or fire.

You must notify your insurer of any incident that may give rise to a claim immediately as failure to do so could result in your claim being refused.

Remember to always keep your receipts for any repair or reinstatement work as your insurer will require these to validate costs.

How do I cover my personal belongings outside of the home?

You can insure items outside of the home under All Risks Cover. All Risks is an optional extension of cover under your Home Insurance policy which protects you against loss or theft of, or accidental damage to, personal valuables. These may include items such as jewellery, laptops, mobile phones, bicycles and sports equipment. This cover is for both inside and outside your home. It can be added to your policy in two ways.

Specified all risks covers individual high value items you specify up to the value declared (sum insured). You will need to add these items to your quote to make sure they’re covered on your policy.

Unspecified all risks allows you to select a total amount (sum insured) that personal valuables will be covered to. You do not need to list items individually, but certain limits apply to Unspecified all risks cover, including a maximum amount payable for any one item. You will need to declare an overall value for the personal valuables you want covered while getting your quote online.

Please make sure to check the policy documents for full details of cover and terms.
